IntraLinks Global Survey Finds that 37 Percent of Investors Have Been Sent Another Institution’s Capital Call, Statement or Tax Document

Joint report with Preqin illustrates that an automated, online solution provides strong benefits for both private equity firms and institutional investors

London, June 29, 2010 — A new joint report from IntraLinks and Preqin titled: “Establishing an Investor Focused Reporting Program” was released today, which presents the results of a global online survey showing that institutional investors have a strong preference for receiving and managing their statements and reports via an automated, online solution. The survey, conducted by IntraLinks, uncovers how common it is for investors to receive another institution’s confidential information. The survey also illustrates that private equity firms still regularly use hard copy for distributing information despite the wishes of institutional investors.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • 37 percent of institutional investors surveyed have been sent another institution’s capital call, statement or tax document, which can lead to damaged relations with the fund and potential legal issues
  • Only one percent of institutional investors surveyed had a preference for hard copy statements but 13 percent still get them this way
  • 56 percent of European based institutional investors prefer to get their statements via an online platform but only 36 percent receive them this way
  • 64 percent of investors in Asia Pacific prefer to get their reports via an online platform but only 31 percent receive them this way
  • 69 percent of respondents agreed with the statement: “It is easier to manage and review reports from earlier periods with an online solution” but 83 percent also stated that it is inconvenient to visit each fund manager’s website to access their reports

“The findings illustrate that private equity firms can be more conscious of their customers’ needs, which is particularly important in today’s environment where institutional investors are reducing the number of managers they work with and are no longer automatically accepting all re-investment requests,” said Paul DiBlasi, VP, product marketing, IntraLinks. “Our survey on investor reporting preferences shows a clear lack of alignment between what investors get and what they want from private equity firms. IntraLinks’ SaaS-based solution enables funds to increase investor satisfaction and deliver accurate reports by automating the entire reporting program, eliminating human error from the process and providing a simple way to access reports.“

The survey gathered responses from 164 investors, with 73 percent of them having more than $200 million currently invested in private equity. IntraLinks is introducing the findings today at the 4vco Private Equity Software and Service Provider Showcase in London. IntraLinks is exhibiting on stand number E3.
